The National Powerboat Scheme

The National Powerboat Scheme is the RYA scheme for those wanting to drive small open powerboats such as RIBs (rigid inflatable boats), sports boats and small launches. These boats are generally powered by an outboard engine, do not normally have accommodation on board, and so are not intended for extended cruises. They may be used for short coastal or inland trips, fishing, safety cover for other watersports, waterskiing or as a support boat for diving.

Whether you use powerboats for leisure or work, or in connection with another activity such as sailing or rescue, we have a course for you. The scheme comprises a series of practical powerboat courses that range from beginner to advanced courses with night navigation excercises. These training courses are also used in conjunction with navigation courses and other one-day courses such as the RYA marine VHF radio courses. Use them simply to increase your knowledge and confidence, or as a progression to the RYA/MCA Certificates of Competence.

The RYA Powerboat Courses:

Powerboat Level One - A great course to teach the youngsters how to drive a powerboat. Covers all the basic skills required for handling a boat and giving the ability to be able to drive under supervision.

Powerboat Level Two - This is most popular courses and is covered over two days, that cover all the skills and background knowledge needed to drive and handle a powerboat confidently both in the harbour and at speed and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC)

Powerboat Intermediate - This powerboating course covers the practical use of pilotage and passage planning by day on coastal waters using both traditional and electronic navigational techniques.

Powerboat Advanced - Learn to navigate by day and night. We cover the weather and other aspects of skippering a small boat on more challenging passages in coastal waters.
