RYA Marine VHF SRC/DSC Radio Course
RYA certificate for marine VHF Radio short range Course and exam with DSC (Digital Select Calling) This is a one day course for anyone who owns and uses either a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio.
This one day course is run on demand, usually every Friday in Salcombe, South Devon. It is a legal requirement for any boat user in control of a vhf radio with DSC to do a course, assessment and exam to use the radio. Digital Select Calling is operated on channel 70 and is used for emergency procedure Maydays through to routine calling. The days course starts with coffee in the chart room and lots of role plays and scripts. By lunchtime you will have confidence of unscripted calls, all other communication devices whilst at sea including use of epirbs, radar, sarts and navtex. The afternoon covers all emergency situations including Mayday, Pan Pan, Mayday Relay and Helicopter rescue procedure. The day is concluded with a short practical assessment, and written test. On successfull completion, and form signing with passport photo you will be sent your RYA Short Range Certificate with DSC.
Course topics include:
- the basics of radio operation
- the correct frequencies (channels) to be used
- distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures
- making ship to shore telephone calls
- Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using simulators
- Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
- Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB)
- Search and Rescue (SART)
This is a great day, full on entertaining stories and often fun unscripted role plays that ensure everyone on the course has fun whilst learning. The RYA certification for the marine vhf licence fee is now £30. The course cost to Sea N Shore is £99.
